Create a Community That Cares About Your Family’s Success

April 23, 2016 by Kathy Zucker

We have to hurry ‪home‬ so I can get ready for the party, I say. I have just picked my ‪kids‬ up from ‪school‬. My hair is wet. I am wearing a ‪pink‬ ‪silk‬ button down shirt and no makeup. Every adult I encounter takes a second look and says, have ‪fun‬ tonight!

Let’s put the presents in the ‪car‬ so you don’t forget them, my ‪daughter‬ says. She and her ‪siblings‬ helped pack and decorate original ‪art‬ of my ‎college‬ ‪fencing‬ ‪team‬ created by a renowned graphic ‪artist‬. And when the babysitter arrives? I race out the door.

Two days ago, I drove into Manhattan. Called my husband to meet me at the car, and then walked together through the gathering dusk carrying packages and bags to a building I have walked past hundreds of times. And inside? Gasped at the white marble stairway. The soaring glass walls with steps wrapping around them. And when I entered the banquet room? Smiled involuntarily to see a room full of people I adore.

I sat at a table draped in white linen. All around me, people clustered so closely that when honorees approached the stage, we had to shift seats to make room for them to pass. The only way I could make my way to the back of the room for a much-needed bathroom break was by tiptoeing out to the garden that spanned the length of the dimly lit ballroom. When I returned, the room was dark while a movie played on stage. I stood at the back of the room in companionable silence with the coach, waiting for a moment when I could return to my seat. I watched faces unguarded by darkness as they laughed at scenes from the past year.

During memorable moments, I wish for a bottle to capture the scents and sounds that surround me. All too soon, they will vanish as people depart for their various destinations. In the next few months, students will graduate and scatter like petals tossed on the wind to far-flung locations. Much as I would like to, I cannot freeze time. The next best option? Is to return to scenes of the past and imbue them with new meaning.

Find Joy In Familiar Places – Urban Jungle Play Carnival Camp

March 18, 2016 by Kathy Zucker

What do you want for your ‪birthday‬ ‪present‬? I ask my ‪toddler‬. Without hesitation, she requests a visit to her favorite indoor play gym. The next day, an email arrives from the gym, inviting my ‪family‬ to attend a carnival-themed camp session.

I don’t want to go, my ‪son‬ says. That is for babies. The party is for ‪kids‬ ages three to nine, I respond. That is you. When I show him the invitation, he grows visibly excited. On the day of the party, all three kids talk about it nonstop. And when they arrive and are greeted by ‎friends‬, games and cotton candy? They do not want to leave when the party ends.

One year ago, my family attended the grand opening for a local playspace. I expected to find the usual padded walls and floors filled with activities. Instead, I found so much more. Friendship. Kindness. And above all? Community.

Every time I visit Urban Jungle Play, the kids and I see old friends and make new ones. All three of my children are challenged artistically, physically and mentally. From sand tables to special visits with organizations like Gate Hill Day Camp, we can never get enough of spending time there.

Cotton Candy, Glitter and Joy – Gate Hill Day Camp at Urban Ju…

I am grateful to be able to bring my children – ages 9, 8 and 4 – to places where all three of them find joy.

Create Joy Everywhere You Go – Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2016 by Kathy Zucker

I want to have a ‪Valentine’s Day party‬, my nine year old ‪daughter‬ says. I sigh. It is late at night. Can we revisit this in the morning? I ask. Okay, she replies.

The next morning, she begins ‪planning‬. ‪Homemade‬ sugar ‪cookies‬. Bowls of icing and sprinkles. ‪Painting‬ ceramic mugs. We set a small table with a flowered tablecloth. Tiny cups. Flowers floating in crystal bowls. As items are added to the table, she grows more and more ‪excited‬. I am going to shower and change into a party dress, she announces. Then I will invite my ‪friends‬.

Over the last seven years, my family has made friends with many nearby children. We never know what each day will bring. Today, the weather is bitterly cold. It is the easiest thing in the world to bring out the tables and chairs scattered all over the house and put them together in party configuration. I let my daughter take the lead in party planning since she has a much stronger artistic eye than I do for decorations and activities. She loves to give to other people, and to enlist her younger siblings in her efforts. And each time? She visibly grows in confidence.
