Social Media Spotlight – 2016 NCAA Fencing Team Championship

March 22, 2016 by Kathy Zucker

I just got off the phone with the Brandeis media coordinator for the 2016 NCAA fencing championships, and here is my media plan for the event.

  • My focus will be on the team event. With four teams in the medal hunt (Columbia, Notre Dame, Princeton and St. John’s all qualified a full roster of twelve fencers) the title will be hotly contested. Could another team with fewer qualifiers win? Anything is possible, but typically more athletes on the field add up to more bouts won.
  • I will be using a variety of social media platforms to cover the team medal race as it unfolds over four days. I plan on posting video using Vine (https://vine.co/u/955648382284845056) and Periscope (https://www.periscope.tv/kathyzucker) – the home base for all my social media will be on Twitter (https://twitter.com/kathyzucker). I will NOT be posting video of the individual semi-final and final matchups since they have zero impact on the team results. You can watch live results at https://www.escrimeresults.com/NCAA/NCAA2016.html.
  • At the end of each day, I will compile a recap of the team competition on Storify (https://storify.com/kathyzucker) and my blog (https://kathyzucker.com/).

If you would like to see coverage of anything specific at the 2016 fencing NCAAs, please tweet a request to me @KathyZucker. I cannot guarantee I will be able to respond directly since I expect to be on the run during the event, but I will do my best to include requests.

Thank you for all your interest, I am SO EXCITED about attending NCAAs for the first time in twenty years!!!!

Kathy

Create Opportunities For Kids to Connect With Champions – NCAA Fencing

March 20, 2016 by Kathy Zucker

I want to give something to the ‪‎fencers‬, my nine year old ‪daughter‬ says. Let’s see what we have in the ‪gift‬ cupboard, I respond. We pull out colorful goodie bags left over from her ‪baby‬ ‪sister‬’s ‪birthday‬ party. Water bottles. ‪Chocolate‬. We decide to add containers of powdered ‪Gatorade‬ that my ‪husband‬ uses when he competes in ‪fencing‬ tournaments.

Can I ‪draw‬ on the bags? she asks. That is a great idea, sweetie pie! Make sure to put the permanent markers back in the locked bin when you are done so your sister can’t use them to decorate the walls. She covers the bags with ‪NCAA‬ trophies, using her father’s as a model. Inspirational sayings. And then packs them carefully in a giant Ikea bag for me to transport to the venue.

Spring break begins this week. My kids are set to go on a fishing trip with family members. When my husband and I agreed to buy a second car, the intention was that I would use it for girlfriend road trips. One week ago, my college fencing team – the current NCAA champions – qualified a full roster to this year’s championship tournament, which begins in five days. And when I discovered an incredibly low hotel room rate through a list of alumni housing options via the host university? I booked it minutes before the deal ended.

With transportation and housing all set, I reached out to a fencer who has been incredibly kind to my family, and asked if she wanted to accompany me on the trip. Much to my joy, she said yes. After laughingly discussing sleeping on her dorm room floor, we agreed that she would take the train to my home early on the first day of competition, and we would drive down together.

This is why I do what I do – to spend time with amazing people. When I first became an entrepreneur, I attended numerous networking events. And came away feeling empty, much like speed dating. So when I identify the possibility of spending significant chunks of time with a room full of people I would love to know? I jump at the opportunity.

Find Joy In Familiar Places – Urban Jungle Play Carnival Camp

March 18, 2016 by Kathy Zucker

What do you want for your ‪birthday‬ ‪present‬? I ask my ‪toddler‬. Without hesitation, she requests a visit to her favorite indoor play gym. The next day, an email arrives from the gym, inviting my ‪family‬ to attend a carnival-themed camp session.

I don’t want to go, my ‪son‬ says. That is for babies. The party is for ‪kids‬ ages three to nine, I respond. That is you. When I show him the invitation, he grows visibly excited. On the day of the party, all three kids talk about it nonstop. And when they arrive and are greeted by ‎friends‬, games and cotton candy? They do not want to leave when the party ends.

One year ago, my family attended the grand opening for a local playspace. I expected to find the usual padded walls and floors filled with activities. Instead, I found so much more. Friendship. Kindness. And above all? Community.

Every time I visit Urban Jungle Play, the kids and I see old friends and make new ones. All three of my children are challenged artistically, physically and mentally. From sand tables to special visits with organizations like Gate Hill Day Camp, we can never get enough of spending time there.

Cotton Candy, Glitter and Joy – Gate Hill Day Camp at Urban Ju…

I am grateful to be able to bring my children – ages 9, 8 and 4 – to places where all three of them find joy.

Find Joy On the Battlefield – NCAA Fencing

March 13, 2016 by Kathy Zucker

When my boyfriend was twenty years old, I watched him win the qualifying tournament for the ‪college‬ ‪NCAA‬ championships. For the past year – our first as a couple – I had watched him elevate his ‪fencing‬ game again and again. But this? Was the first time I saw him win a major ‪competition‬. And he was not the only one winning. I watched teammates rack up unexpected wins that led to a blaze of blue atop the dais.

Today, my alma mater will be heading back to the qualifiers as they look to defend their title as NCAA ‪champions‬. My ‪husband‬ and I will be watching live as the results come in. I wish the ‪Columbia‬ fencing ‪team‬ and all the competitors ‪joy‬ on the ‪Northeast Regionals‬ battlefield today.

When people ask me what my husband and I do to keep the romance alive, I tell them that we hit each other with swords. Fencing is the glue that binds my family together. Each Saturday, my husband brings one, two or five family members to practice at our local club. On weekdays, he heads into Manhattan to attend evening practice at one of the numerous elite clubs there. Every few weeks, he attends competitions in driving distance of our home.

Now that we own two cars, the possibilities have expanded. One of us can attend a fencing event that begins at dawn, while the other one arrives later with our three young children. This is a setup that my husband and I have talked and dreamed about for years. To be able to compete and involve our family is a gift. And I am grateful for it every day.

Find a Place For Every Member of Your Family

March 12, 2016 by Kathy Zucker

Can I go to ‎fencing‬ practice this week? my ‪husband‬ asks. Sure, I reply. After checking the online ‪family‬ calendar, he reports that my ‪work‬ meeting and his practice are scheduled for the same time. Bonus? We will be on different floors of the same building. Why don’t you ‪drive‬ the ‪kids‬ into the city in the new ‪car‬ and I will watch them during your meeting, he says.

Over the last week, I have been slowly cleaning out our old car. The two older kids no longer need ‪carseats‬. When I remove the seats, I discover layers of grime and cheerios on the bench beneath them.

I am determined to avoid making a mess in the new car. After thoroughly sanitizing the old car and dropping it off at the ‪auto‬ body ‪shop‬ to repair exterior damage, I purchase seat protectors. And then? I tuck the ‪loveys‬ belonging to all three kids into pouches that keep them safe and clean, up and away from the muddy floor.

Ten years ago, fencing practice was part of my weekly routine. I would drive into Manhattan, aiming to arrive at the beginning of free evening street parking. Meet my husband at practice. Then drive home together.

I thought that part of my life was over. To be able to bring my children along, and to watch them practice with some of the top athletes in the country? Is a priceless gift.

Friend: it must be in the genetics.
